I spent the summer looking for vocabulary workbooks to help prepare my rising 5th grader for the ISEE test. I looked mainly on-line and finally settled on one that I kept in my shopping cart for the longest time. I'd hesitated in getting it because the sampling of vocabulary words on the front cover somehow didn't seem appropriate or all that relevant. So I ended up printing out vocabulary lists from the internet and making my own exercises...Then I found this. I knew it wasn't a workbook, but the price was right and I was impressed by the number of uniformly good reviews (something I didn't really see in other books). This book is fantastic. It is small - bigger than pocket size but slim and light enough to easily take with you wherever you go. It is well organized and easy to use. Each word comes with a pronunciation key, part of speech, a concise definition that is easy to understand (I always found it frustrating whenever I looked up a word only to find the definition equally indecipherable), a quote from literature using the word, and an explanation of the word origin (Latin, Greek, French, etc.). My son really got a kick out of the literature quote for the first word on the list ("adversary"), from Harry Potter. He is also learning about Latin (etc.) prefixes and other word origin clues which will help him to figure out other vocabulary words. But most useful of all is the selection of vocabulary. I appreciate that the words are relevant and useful for students advancing in school and in reading. A sample of the words in the book includes: apprehensive, aptitude, barricade, brandish, conspicuous, defiance, deft, disdain, egregious, havoc, imperious, and so on. I'm an educator and avid reader and these are all words that we continue to use into our adult lives. For those preparing for standardized tests, I think this is an excellent reference. I found a few of the same words that are in the sample ISEE test and they appear to be on par with the type of vocabulary that appears on those types of tests. This is not part of the review but I can also share here how we are using the book in case that is useful for anyone. My son and I cover about 2-3 words at a time and go through the entries in the book together. I'll then ask him about the words over the course of the day - when he gets home from school, while we're in the car, while we're eating, etc. We make up sentences using the words and try to use them during the day, sometimes getting creative and silly by trying to combine 2 or 3 words in one sentence. So far he LOVES this "game" and insists on doing it every night! This has been working so much better than any of the workbook or workbook-type exercises that I have given him in the past.

I am using 100 Words with my 5th grader.I knew I needed to find a unique approach to engage him, so I challenged him to a word duel.He must scroll through the pages and choose a word that I may incorrectly define. If he chooses well, he places a check mark on the inside cover to retain his successful wins.Since I never look in the book, I never seek words he does not know. He is developing his own vocabulary without any pressure, and having fun.

I bought this for my word-loving 9 year old for fun. Sometimes she and I hang out for a few minutes and flip through to discover something new, and they are mostly new for her. When she discovered the word adversary, it was like an epiphany - a word that exactly described a girl in her fourth grade class! Of course it makes me sad that my daughter has an adversary, but it makes me happy that she felt a connection to a word in this book so personally. Words are great. Each word gets a treatment that is bolstered by at least one passage from a book that a child of middle school age might read. We've followed up by checking a few of those books from the library for my daughter to peruse. For my 9 year old, these books are stretch goals because of the stamina needed to read them, but it's nice to have them accessible.I highly recommend this book for fun for a rising reader/word lover.

I'm homeschooling two elementary aged children. We pick a word a week and and learn it. It broadens their vocabulary and it's fun for them. Great book!

We do about 3 pages a week. I like that the word examples are in sentences from books that children read like Harry Potter.

Very happy with this little book especially for the price! I bought this to use as a homeschooling supplement for our L.A program. My kids love to read and this book has lots of words that are in the books they currently read. Sometimes kids pass over words they don't know or think they know! We use this book for many fun activities. The words in this book are also great to incorporate into everyday conversations! After a lesson I find my kids using the words as they were meant to used in writing and conversation! We started in 5th grade, and are still using it in 6th. Ten stars!!!

My daughter has never been this into studying vocabulary words before. The words were easy to learn. With all the different definitions in it.

Bought this for my 6th and 8th grader. The words in this book are excellent. They are words that are used frequently in the English language
