Great follow up to the first one. Many of the examples from first are reused here with new examples for the modern stuff such as flexbox. I really like his style; its clear, brisk, and the examples work. Highly recommended.
“Do you really need a book to learn CSS?†That’s what I found when I searched google for CSS books. I had gone through the w3schools CSS and bootstrap tutorials and thought I understood CSS. Then I worked with CSS professionally for a few months and had been struggling to get things to appear on the page how I wanted. No matter how much I googled some issues, I ended up having to compromise on a few things, or rely on bootstrap to implement things I didn’t know how to. So I hoped a book could help me learn CSS, and chose this one.Free online resources tell you all the rules to CSS, this book tells you how experts use them: how to use progressive enhancement so that you can use new CSS features like grids and flexbox but still be compatible on old browsers; what a good line length is for text; why you should use em for sizing; how to make animations look alive; and how to use javascript polyfills to implement new CSS features in old browsers. These are all things that I didn’t find in free tutorials. I'm sure I could have found some from searching blogs. Others I never thought to look for.My main problem with this book is how the material is presented for learning. For learning how to code or use a language, books are already at a disadvantage to computer applications because you can’t run code in them. So its even more painful that this book makes it impossible to code along with the examples. Most chapters go through implementing an ambitious web page. It will start simple, and increment. The problem is the book leaves out a lot of style properties along the way, and only provides the end result online. I understand it would take up a lot of pages in the book to provide all the details, and if you aren’t coding along on your own it doesn’t matter, but coding yourself is essential for learning.I don’t consider its shortcomings a dealbreaker for me or anyone considering buying the book. Having tried to teach myself CSS using free online tutorials and resources, failing, and then reading this book, I have to say it’s worth it. However, it’s not as easy to get through as it should be.
This book is an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of advanced CSS. There's a lot of good information, and there are lots of references to websites and standards documents for more detailed information.Unfortunately, the author is not very good at explaining things. His descriptions are wordy and convoluted. Even when reading about things that I already understand well, I got confused by his explanations.I recommend this book for anyone who wants to come up to speed on the latest advances in CSS, but I am hoping something bitter comes along soon.
I am a software developer, and wanted to get a better handle on CSS just so my user interfaces wouldn't be so plain. I expected this to be pretty straight-forward, but it turns out to be way more complex than I expected! This book did a good job explaining how the many features of CSS are used, the examples were clear and there was helpful information about browser support, performance considerations, etc. I learned a lot from this book.
Absolutely excellent book. So well written and displayed on the page. I would recommend everything about this book.
great book with very good teaching methods
Absolutely excellent book! If you have some CSS experience and want to learn more or you know CSS and want to learn good techniques and about the new additions to CSS3. Then this book is for you. Heck, anyone doing any CSS should read this book. Covers the old standard topics and the new CSS3 topics in detail. Provides best practices and has a lot of links to good references.I will probably go back and reread this book since it had so much great material!
