This is a wonderful atlas. I ordered it about one month ago and I use it regularly. When I watch TV, I use it to reference various topics cited on the shows. For example, Anthony Bourdain, Explore Parts Unkown on Netflix. It's nice seeing where these places are on a map when referenced. Also, the first 100 pages are filled with outstanding world data such as automobiles, cell phones, armed conflict areas, space, geology, everything. I really enjoy it over punching on the Google machine through my phone, iPad or computer. Refreshing to have an old school atlas at your finger tips. And the images in the Atlas are awesome!
The book itself is beautiful ~ lovely, up-to-date maps. It's a large book, so you can see many of the details clearly. However, when we opened the book, six of the pages were upside down (much of the satellite section). It was very easy to return (we received a UPS label). We received the replacement just days after ordering it. In our new atlas, all the pages were in order--HOWEVER, the entire cover was upside down. So when you go to open the book, you start with an upside down index. You have to flip the book over and up to start at the beginning. Since we didn't know WHAT sort of misprint we'd get if we ordered a THIRD copy, we decided just to keep this one, defective or not. It was a gift for my husband, and I'd wanted it to be perfect, but . . . .
This is a fine atlas and I highly recommend it. BUT mine got by quality controls and was assembled with the cover on BACKWARDS and UPSIDE down. I am keeping it because it is such a novelty.
I was looking for an updated atlas because the one I have now was copyrighted in 1998. "Atlas of the World" had about the same number of pages as the old one, and it looked really nice online. The book arrived the next day, even though I didn't ask for any special mailing privileges. "Atlas" weighs 7.5 pounds and is 14.6 by 11.3 inches, which makes it hard to access unless you have a big table to support it. I wanted it for the maps, to reference while reading history books, but they were a big disappointment : political divisions were marked in the same shade and weight of red as were the many highways.The European, African, & Asian maps are good, except for the messy highways; the USA and Mexican maps are an eyesore. The maps start on page 140, after all kinds of information that would probably be more appropriate in an almanac. The maps of the various United States are disappointing because they don't show much detail, and they lump several states together, per page.
as soon as i opened this huge book, i said this is something every child should grow up with, and ordered another copy my inquisitive 4 year old niece. astonishing variety of the planet laid out in beautifully illustrated and understandable text---and great maps too, of course!
The 25th edition is excellent. I still have the 5th edition because of its quality. Worth the purchase price. The cities section and arial photography is excellent. Highly recommend.
Perfect. Just what I wanted. Great coloring. Can't beat the price.
