About the Author
Nicole Horsky has been involved with dogs since she was a girl, either her own or others’ that she looked after on a daily basis, or took in whilst their owners were on holiday. Her particular interest in blind dogs was sparked as a result of owning Elliot - a gorgeous mix of gundog and wirehaired pointer who features in the book - who is blind, and so she is well-placed to write this book. Nicole has shared her experience of living with Elliot with many other owners of blind or partially-sighted dogs, helping them and their dogs to adapt to their new circumstances and get the most out of life; in the process, she believes that these special canines have, more than any other, taught her about dog behavior. Nicole is a dog trainer and lives in Stokerau, Austria.

My dog went from sighted to blind in about two weeks courtesy of diabetes [and some poor advice and information from my vet related to future problems], so it was and remains a tough adjustment for both of us. This book was extremely helpful in putting the issues and situations in perspective, providing some pathways to help train my dog, and the real-life stories also put the blindness comments and problems into a nice package that was both easy to read and highly informative. If you have a blind dog and are starting on this trail, I'd strongly recommend this as a calming place to begin you new life together.
My mini schnauzer was just diagnosed with SARDS last week. I ordered this book beforehand since I knew she was losing her sight. There are hardly any books available that deal with this subject matter; in fact, I could only find 2 in print. I purchased this, since it sounded like what I needed, is a newer publication, and doesn't have any of the controversy surrounding the unsubstantiated claims of treatments or possible cures for SARDS that the publisher of the other book is making. My veterinary ophthalmologist and my regular vet both say that there is no scientifically proven treatment or cure for SARDS, so I wanted a book that would help me deal with my dog's adjustment to blindness and not go into a lot of other areas about 'possible' causes and treatments. This book gives me what I need, in a concise, interesting format. It is well written and is a big help. If you are like me and just need information to help you and your dog deal with your dog's blindness, this book will serve you well and help you teach your dog important new commands and learn fun new games to enjoy life with you.
I bought this book because my dog was going blind. We were devastated. This purchase was one of the best things I did for my dog. This book gave me hope and gave me ideas on how to help her adapt to her impending blindness. If you are in the same situation, it is definitely worth reading.
I recently adopted a blind dog and have been reading up on living with a blind dog. This is a must-have book for people with a blind dog or people considering to adopt a blind dog. It is a wonderful book with beautiful pictures and smack-full of great advice. The focus of the book is to reduce stress in your blind dog, boost the dog's self-confidence and build a strong, positive relationship with your blind dog. Most of the advice was really good, except for a few places. For example, the author recommends walking a blind dog on a 2+ meter leash (approx. 7 ft) in urban areas. I can't envision how one would navigate around lampposts, trash cans, people in New York City or London with such a long leash. My only complaint is that the book isn't longer. I would have liked to have learned about more tricks and games and have more detail about teach the dog new things.
good information if you have a blind dog. Our Jesse is still young, just turned 5 and he has been blind for about 6 months due to retina detachments in both eyes because of an inherited gene.
I have a dog diagnosed with SARDs. He went suddenly blind. I wanted to get ideas about how to make his life easier. Over time he'll adapt. There were a few suggestions I could use, but mostly I think the book was written to ease the human side of adapting to the dog's blindness. I probably expected more to the advice side, and much I already knew. However I'll donate the book to the vet for the next pet parent with a blind dog.
Not what I was expecting. I have a newly blind dog and was looking for training tips.
This book provided some new ideas for dealing with my dog who was recently diagnosed with progressive retinal atrophy. Emphasis is on all the other senses that dogs have to cope with vision loss and how we, as humans, need to stay positive and the changes that we can expect. He's actually handling his vision loss better than I am, and had already mapped our home and yard before it became obvious that he was losing his eyesight.
